Tonsil Surgery - Richmond, VA

Tonsils are small masses of tissue located in the back of the mouth that ward off infection. However, often tonsils become infected themselves in a condition known as Tonsillitis.

When tonsils become infected, they become very painful, swollen, and red. If they are repeatedly infected, a tonsillectomy, the removal of your tonsils, is recommended. Our doctor performs tonsil surgery for patients in our region.

What do the tonsils do?

The primary purpose of the tonsils is to trap and destroy bacteria and viruses. Your immune system will not have any problems if your tonsils are removed. In fact, removing your tonsils may make the job of your immune system easier if frequent infections are an issue.

What are the symptoms of tonsillitis?

  • Heavy snoring

  • Constant mouthbreathing

  • Sore throats

  • Poor voice quality

  • Discomfort of pain when swallowing

  • Ear infections

  • Fever

  • Swollen glands in the neck

  • Breath odor

What is tonsil surgery like?

Initially, tonsillitis may be treated with antibiotics. Surgery is considered after you and your doctor have determined that a tonsillectomy is appropriate for you. The patient will receive general anesthesia and the procedure takes 20 – 30 minutes.

Your doctor performs tonsil surgery by removing the tonsils through the mouth. Sometimes during tonsillectomy, the adenoids, also part of the lymphatic system, may be removed as well. After a period of recovery that can take up to 5 hours, patients return home on the same day. You may stay in the hospital overnight and go home the next day, depending on your condition. You will have a sore throat and be uncomfortable for about seven to ten days. Typical recovery may take several days to one week.
